Terminator 6 Has Been Pushed Back
Although the first two Terminator movies remain sci-fi movie classics, the succeeding three movies weren't met with nearly the same amount of positive reception, and both Terminator Salvation and Terminator Genisys failed to launch trilogies. Now with James Cameron back to being creatively involved and Deadpool's Tim Miller attached as director, the still-untitled Terminator 6 is aiming to launch a new era for the killer robot-filled franchise. That being said, we'll have to wait a little longer to see what the final product looks like, as Terminator 6 has been delayed to November 22, 2019.
Originally Terminator 6 was supposed to be released on July 26, 2019, making it one of the later blockbusters to arrive in that summer movie season. Now that's no longer happening, as Paramount Pictures officially has pushed the movie back four months (via THR). While no specific reason was provided for the date shift, Arnold Schwarzenegger, who is reprising the T-800, said back in March that production is now expected to start in June and go until the middle of October, so I imagine that the studio decided to delay the movie a little bit to ensure that the cast and crew have enough time to properly work on it. Terminator 6's only opening weekend competition right now is an untitled Marvel/Fox movie, but that will change eventually. Other notable movies opening that month include Wonder Woman 2, Bond 25 and Frozen 2.
While Terminator 6 certainly could have worked well as a late summer release, if Paramount did indeed push the movie back for production-related reasons, it worked out. The November-December period is another great time frame for blockbusters to have great success, and I imagine this will be a popular pick for folks looking to head to the theater on Thanksgiving break the week after. It's also worth noting that this will be the first Terminator movie not to be released in the summer since the original's October launch back in 1984.
Rather than follow up on the lingering plot threads left behind by Terminator Genisys, Terminator 6 will ignore the events of the last three movies and serve as a direct sequel to Terminator 2: Judgement Day. Along with Arnold Schwarzenegger coming back, Linda Hamilton will reprise Sarah Connor, who last appeared on camera in Terminator 2, but made a vocal cameo in Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines. As for Terminator 6's new players, Halt and Catch Fire's Mackenzie Davis has been tapped to play a human solder-assassin who is on a mission. However, this person will not be the new main protagonist, and the search is still on to the actress who will fill the same kind of role that Sarah Connor did in the original movies.
Once again, Terminator 6 will now be released in theaters on November 22, 2019. Keep checking back with CinemaBlend for more news about how the movie is coming along, but in the meantime, you can see what's being released this year by scanning through our 2018 release schedule.
