The Emotional Way Halloweens Crew Supported Jamie Lee Curtis On Set
While horror movies are a beloved part of the filmmaking landscape, there was a time when it was all uncharted territory. A passion project made on a minimal budget, Halloween is one of the most beloved horror franchises, and fans of the slasher subgenre have the original movie to thank. Blumhouse's upcoming Halloween movie will be a direct sequel to the 1978 original, ignoring the bevy of sequels in the process. Jamie Lee Curtis is returning as Laurie Strode, a woman who has been haunted by Michael Myers' attack for decades. Curtis recently revealed one moment of solidarity she had with the crew, and it's sure to give any Halloween fan chills. When filming a scene where Laurie was reflecting on her life, the crew wore special outfits to lend support.
When I approached the truck to do my alone acting work in an empty truck, with 100 people surrounding her, the entire crew wore name tags that said 'We are Laurie Strode.' What they were saying to me, what they said in that moment, was that the trauma that happened to Laurie Strode, they were all part of it. That they were all carrying her, caring for her, and hoping to deliver her from evil. And that was incredibly emotional for me, just the gesture of that. It meant we were all in this together, in a way that Laurie Strode never had in her life. And that has made all the difference.
Does anyone else have chills? Laurie Strode is the OG scream queen, and the new Halloween will be very focused on her somewhat broken psyche. From the trailers, you can see that she's been preparing for another conflict with her attacker for decades, and the movie will no doubt explore how that affected her. But it all may be worth it when Michael comes knocking, and apparently rakes up an impressive body count in the process.
Laurie Strode's trauma was briefly explored in H20, which was one of the more well received Halloween sequels. In that movie, Laurie had moved away from Haddonfield, adopted a pseudonym, and had a son. But she also suffered from horrible nightmares, and coped through self-medication via alcoholism.
In her same conversation with Syfy, Jamie Lee Curtis revealed more about Laurie's life over the past 40 years. Namely, how she wasn't given the proper help after surviving her harrowing attack.
Very clearly, Laurie Strode had no help. She had no mental health services, a group of psychologists didn't descend on Haddonfield. I believe Laurie Strode went back to high school two days later with a bandage on her arm, and that's about it. I don't think people talked about it, and so for me the exploration of trauma was integral to, not only the writing, but for then, the performance.
While there may have been some naysayers and trepidation associated with the upcoming Halloween movie, Jamie Lee Curtis comments about Laurie's journey show how carefully everyone involved with Blumhouse's sequel is approaching the franchise. It's a movie crafted by superfans, and with contributions from original stars Jamie Lee Curtis, Nick Castle, and a score by John Carpenter himself.
