Theater Accidentally Screens R-Rated The Curse Of La Llorona Instead Of Detective Pikachu

Movie theaters are busy places with a lot of moving parts, so it's to be expected that mistakes will happen. However, one recent theater error may have left lots of children scarred for life when instead of a screening of Detective Pikachu, an audience comprised largely of children, was subjected to The Curse of La Llorona and all the trailers that went with it.

The situation started when Ryan George went to a screening that was supposed to be Detective Pikachu. As one would expect, the theater had a lot of kids in it. They, and their parents, probably began to wonder when the first thing to happen after the lights went down was a trailer for a movie that those kids really didn't need to be subjected to. As George said on Twitter...

The children did not look away. As one might expect, this did not go well. If this had been a random mismatch of a trailer and had been an isolated incident, things probably would have been ok. However, it was not. The next trailer to run wasn't much better.

Andddd kids are crying. Now the Joker trailer is playing.

I can imagine at this point the parents might have been more upset than the kids. I can imagine very young children looking forward to Detective Pikachu simply being more confused by the Joker trailer than anything. Parents, however, were probably quite disturbed.

If you guessed that the terror did not end there, you'd be correct.

NOW IT'S CHUCKY OH NO CHILDREN OH NO

Yeah, the killer toy probably went over really well with both the kids and their parents. I can imagine.

Of course, as it turned out, the random horror movie trailers stuck in front of Detective Pikachu were actually just symptoms of a bigger problem, as the theater had actually mis-scheduled the screening and was actually playing Conjuring-verse movie The Curse of La Lorona instead of the Pokemon movie.

OH MY GOD THEY'RE PLAYING LA LLORANA INSTEAD OF DETECTIVE PIKACHU

At some point, the mistake was realized and the movie was shut off, at which point the entire audience was moved into another theater that had, one assumes, started playing Detective Pikachu accidentally, as the new audience found the film waiting for them.

We've all been moved to another theatre where Detective Pikachu is just paused? At least there aren't any more murders on-screen

One certainly hopes they started the movie over from the beginning once the audience was seated.

With modern theaters it's now incredibly convenient to move any given movie to any screening room where it's needed with just a couple presses of a button. There's no need to physically move reels or even a disc. However, if those buttons are pressed in error, you can end up giving kids nightmares.

Let's Talk About That Chilling Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom Twist

Warning: massive spoilers for Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom are in play. If you haven't seen the film yet, bookmark this page, and come back once you're caught up.

Throughout the entirety of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom's plot, there are various twists and turns that keep the narrative humming -- all the way to its grand finale. Alongside the decision to let the dinosaurs roam free, the film drops a gigantic bombshell with little Maisie Lockwood -- Benjamin's granddaughter, letting the creatures loose into the wilds. And yet, this pretty large moment ties into a more shocking revelation that comes a good deal earlier in the film, which is the true nature of Maisie's existence in the world, and how she came to be. It's that twist that not only serves as a bigger shocker in the Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom storyline, but also ultimately leads up the perfect execution of its final play. This is the last chance to turn away before spoilers kick in, so you've been warned.

We're lead to believe that Benjamin Lockwood is the caretaker of his dear granddaughter in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, due to the untimely passing of her mother in a car crash. While we're not given too many details involving that accident, we later find out that this loss was so devastating to Benjamin that it inspired him to do the one thing that even a young John Hammond couldn't be party to: he cloned his daughter, thus giving her life once more as his presumed granddaughter, Maisie.

On the surface, this twist alone is enough to dive into some of the darker waters that Michael Crichton has been known to explore in his literary career. Once again, humanity found a brand new toy of creation, allowing the creator to believe they're God. Naturally, those in the possession of those creative powers feel allowed to misuse said toy for fun and profit. It's the exact story beat Jurassic Park was born from, though this time it's literally personal. Bringing an extinct species back from erasure is one thing, but to clone a person and raise them in the image of their genetic source is a new, sick wrinkle in the story of the Jurassic World era of the franchise.

This is only the beginning of the nightmare that Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom poses, as after Eli Mills killed Benjamin Lockwood by smothering him, he seems rather insistent on becoming Maisie's guardian. Even when he's faced with Owen and Claire taking Maisie away from him, he sounds as if he thinks he's the best person to care for her, seeing as they "don't know what she really is." It's possible this comment goes deeper than her being a genetic copy of Benjamin's daughter. Rather, it could be an indication of how/if the character will be used in Jurassic World 3.

Two thoughts come to mind when trying to decipher Eli's remarks on Maisie: one is that since she's a clone, she may need some sort of special medical treatment to keep her healthy and free of any defects. Once Owen and Claire drive off with her into the sunrise, they may have doomed her to poor health, and possibly death. But even if that's not a factor, the existence of a successfully cloned human would touch off a firestorm of political, moral, and capitalistic proportions. The laws of nature have been basically violated, and as such even bigger questions of whether we should be playing God will come into play, should Maisie be outed for who and what she is.

But even worse is the fact that Eli probably wanted Maisie as a prime marketing tool for his future endeavors in genetic tampering. What better advertisement do you need than a young girl who acts as a perfect copy of her "mother?" That sells the powers that InGen has at their disposal more effectively than any coupon day at a dinosaur park. It's through that idea that Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom becomes so much more than just a film about protecting dinosaurs -- it becomes about protecting humanity from its darker, albeit sometimes well intentioned, self.

It's hard to know the future of Maisie in Jurassic World's franchise future. Side characters, especially the kids, tend to disappear after one installment. However, the way that Jurassic World and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom tie together on a story level would suggest that since she was so important to the plot of the second film in the trilogy, Maisie will be back around for the third chapter. Let's hope that if she does return, we'll get to delve more into her mysterious origins, and just why she's so important to those who would abuse her existence for personal gain.

Why Robin Hood May Be The Biggest Movie Flop Of 2018

Over the last few months, the Robin Hood trailers have teased Kingsman actor Taron Egerton's return to action in a new, fun-looking take on the famed Robin of Loxley. However, when the movie hit theaters last week, it failed to capture the attention of people contributing to the movie box office. In fact, Robin Hood may end up being the biggest flop of 2018, factoring in budget.

Robin Hood, like many of the Thanksgiving releases in recent years, opened on Wednesday with previews Tuesday evening. However, with a crowded Thanksgiving window, it was always likely at least one or two films wouldn't hit the target and this year it looks like Robin Hood was the big miss. In fact, the movie only made $14 million during its opening five-day window and ended up in seventh place over the weekend. This is compounded by the fact the flick cost only just under $100 million for Lionsgate to make--a relatively hefty budget compared to some movies.

This means there is a long, long haul for Robin Hood to even start making its money back. "Wait," some might say, "Even with the less-than-stellar numbers, why is Robin Hood potentially the biggest movie flop of 2018?" If you are asking that, it's a great question. For example, this weekend was only the opening weekend for Robin Hood and the movie should go on to make more money over the next few weeks, which may not seem so bad at the outset.

In addition, Robin Hood has already made more domestically than The Darkest Minds, a new movie property Fox gambled on and lost earlier this year. That flick only made $12.7 million in total domestically, although it went on to make an addition $28 million plus at the foreign box office. Robin Hood has already made $22.9 million worldwide during its first weekend in theaters and will make more money as time goes on, so how is it a bigger flop?

It all has to do with that nearly $100 million budget Lionsgate reportedly shelled out, according to The Wrap, in order to make the visual effects pop in Robin Hood. The Darkest Minds may not have made its budget back, but that budget was only a paltry $34 million. Another flop this year, Annihilation, only made $32.7 million, but again, the flick only cost $40 million to make. Budgets are complicated, but when we say "biggest flop," here, we really mean it may lose the most money for a studio. Not that it will have the lowest box office, period. Specialty box office numbers are often lower and expected to be lower, for example.

In this case, even if Robin Hood ends up making another $30 million between domestic and foreign numbers, there's going to be a huge deficit between box office numbers and the cost of the film, and that's not even including the dollars spent advertising the movie.

It's a similar issue that Solo: A Star Wars Story faced earlier this year when it made a whopping $392.9 million at the worldwide box office, but was still considered a flop, thanks to costly reshoots screwing Disney out of a profit. In that case, analysts have estimated Disney will lose more than $50 million on the movie.

It's hard to tell how much Lionsgate shelled out to advertise Robin Hood, but we do know the number is high. Last week, Robin Hood topped ad spending on TV with an estimated $7.9 million spent on 1,037 ads. Between the low box office and the high ad spending, the deficit could well be more than Solo, which is how we get to Robin Hood perhaps being the biggest flop of 2018. (Or at the very least, the most expensive.)

There's another month to go in 2018 and there are some movies that are gigantic question marks still coming up. I'm guessing DC fans will likely show up for Aquaman and Mary Poppins Returns has some good buzz, but there are some untested projects out there, including the Michael Bay-less Bumblebee prequel and Mortal Engines, which has Peter Jackson's name splashed over its trailers. A lot of movies will be competing for our attention around the same time next month.

Traditionally, Thanksgiving is a good time for the studios and the theater chains as families venture to catch movies. This year was no exception, as titles like Creed II and Ralph Breaks The Internet made a lot of moolah, while other movies, including Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald, managed to rake in additional dough. (Venom even had a good weekend!) Regardless, Robin Hood just didn't manage to make much of an impression. We'll have to wait and see how the Taron Egerton flick fares in the weeks to come, as families venture out to catch movies they might have missed over the Thanksgiving holiday, however.

There is some precedent for movies that don't do much early on to play catch up later. Something similar happened with The Greatest Showman as audiences found the musical flick in the weeks after release, so it's not impossible for Robin Hood to pick up a bit moving forward. However, Robin Hood is also dealing with a B Cinemascore, which means audiences aren't really being drawn to the flick like they were with Showman, which was well-liked by audiences and nabbed an A CinemaScore as people were exiting the theater. Regardless, with a crowded slate heading into December and a slew of additional movies hitting theaters nearer the Christmas holiday, the next few weeks should be really exciting to keep an eye on. In fact, they should be a few exciting weeks to actually get out and see movies in the theater, should you be so inclined.
