What Birds Of Prey's Jurnee Smollett Could Look Like As Black Canary

Warner Bros. has quite a few different DC projects in the works, but it looks like its fast-tracking Birds of Prey. The movie will team up Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn with DC heroes Huntress and Black Canary, both of whom were cast this week. Mary Elizabeth Winstead will be taking on the role of Huntress while Jurnee Smollett-Bell landed Black Canary. We've still got a while before we see any stills of the two in costume, but the internet is wasting little time to fill in the gap. Check out this fan rendering of Smollett-Bell as Black Canary.

There's never any shortage of fan art when it comes to superhero movies, and we can expect a wave of Birds of Prey art to hit the web before the movie starts releasing its content. Until then, one Redditor by the name of IamTsukasa as shared their take on Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary. The art takes heavy inspiration from Arrow's version of the character over on the CW. (In fact, it might be the same costume. The Arrow Cave is used as a background). Regardless, this is a decent look at what Smollett-Bell could look like, but I think that the movie costume won't take much inspiration from the CW.

Black Canary has gone through a few different costumes (and origins) in the comics, but the majority typically involve fishnet stockings. It'll be interesting to see what direction the movie takes it, as Black Canary -- like many female superheroes -- has a history of being sexed up in the comics, and I doubt fans want to see that reflected in a major motion picture.

For those who may not be familiar, Black Canary is a street-level superhero in DC Comics. She's one of the best martial artists around, and she possesses a sonic blast that she calls her "Canary Cry." Her origin can be a bit complicated, as she has been rebooted and retconned a few times. At one point she was a founder of the Justice League, and at another, she was the daughter of the first Black Canary and picked up her mantle. She's usually romantically linked to Green Arrow, forming one of DC's power couples. Additionally, she's a frequent member of the Birds of Prey, an all-female crime-fighting team.

Very little is known about the plot of Birds of Prey, but it will be Black Canary's debut in the DCEU. Cathy Yan will direct based on a script written by Christina Hodson. How Stephen King Really Feels About Pet Sematary's Major Change

Warning: while the marketing campaign for Pet Sematary gives away the big change in the films plot, some audience members may have avoided the trailers for this very reason. If youre one of those people, come back to this story after youve seen the film, as were about to discuss that change in depth.

Adaptations can be an authors worst nightmare, as sometimes changes to the source material might make a film feel more cinematic, but betray the original vision of what inspired the film in the first place. No one knows this better than bestselling author Stephen King, who not only has had a tremendous amount of his works adapted for film and television, but isnt particularly shy about whether or not he approves of the changes made. So seeing him give an official OK to Ellie Creed switching places with Gage as the child who dies to kick off the storys later plot developments seems to fit with the authors overall approval of the film in general.

In an email response to an inquiry towards this point, King provided the following remarks as to how he felt about the overall alteration of Gage and Ellies fates:

I thought the change was OK. Both versions the old one, where Gage dies, and the new one, where Ellie dies result in the same chain of events. I dont necessarily think one version of the story is better, but Im sure the directors found it easier to work with a girl zombie than with a toddler zombie.

Stephen Kings acceptance of the change isnt a total surprise, as actor Jason Clarke had previously signaled that the author was OK with making Ellie the victim of that infamous Orinco tanker truck. In his explanation, Clarke noted that a supporting reason for the change to Pet Sematarys crucial fatality was the obvious issue of Gages younger age not exactly being the best choice for a cinematic villain. Sure enough, that reasoning seemed to pan out when Stephen King himself was contacted by The New York Times to discuss the big change to the 2019 adaptations narrative.

The decision certainly hasnt dampened Kings response to the Pet Sematary remake, as the author loved the film so much, he dropped some pretty colorful language stating as much. For those of you who are worried this is an exercise in diplomacy, designed to play ball until the films initial release has passed, lets not forget Stephen Kings response to The Dark Towers release. While he was initially diplomatic about the films decisions pertaining to approaching his legendary series, King did eventually point out the obvious flaws in that would-be franchises launch.

At this moment though, it looks like Stephen King not only enjoys Pet Sematarys modern revamp, but that his excitement comes even after a pretty big change was made to his original story. With that stamp of approval now affixed to the film, it might have the potential to boost its standings during its second weekend of release, which in turn might only help bring more of the authors work to the big screen.
