The Latest Hobbs And Shaw Footage Totally Kicked Our Asses

Back in February we got our first look at a film that seems like it could be one of the most fun blockbuster releases to come out in 2019. Spinning off from the Fast & Furious franchise with two of the most charismatic stars in the ensemble, David Leitchs Hobbs & Shaw looks like an over-the-top, insane, and ridiculous ride, packed with some brilliant action that should seriously thrill audiences worldwide this summer.

It seems, however, that what weve seen so far is only the tip of the iceberg. Today at CinemaCon in Las Vegas during the Universal Studios presentation, we got to see the latest trailer for Hobbs & Shaw, and it succeeded in not just blowing our minds, but also presenting some crazy set pieces that sent legitimate chills down the spine.

Wasting no time diving straight into the ass kicking, the Hobbs & Shaw footage began with the two titular characters in the middle of a mission and standing in front of a pair of twin doors. After some quick debate over which door belongs to who, Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) makes the call to open the one on the right and it turns out to be not such a great choice, as he suddenly discovers a team of henchmen waiting for him on the other side. As Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) mocks the choice that was made, Shaw immediately jumps into action and starts taking down his enemies with his impressive skills.

Meanwhile, Hobbs opens his door, and though there is only one dude standing behind it, he is so big that he actually makes the former Diplomatic Security Service agent look tiny, and he wields a giant wrench. Still, the hero is able to make quick work of his enemy, felling him with a single hit. As it happens, the two opposite hallways in which the eponymous characters find themselves are separated by a glass window, and so Hobbs is able to watch his partner fight as he himself casually strolls to the exit on the other side. Eventually they both reach the end, and Hobbs picks up his single foe and pushes his face against a scanner, opening a door. Staring back daggers, Shaw tries to replicate the action with one of his unconscious companions, but it doesnt quite work leading the British fighting machine to smash the guys face into the scanner multiple times with sincere frustration.

From there the trailer offered a bit more of the plot, explaining that bulletproof villain Brixton (Idris Elba) has put a target on the back of Hattie Shaw (Vanessa Kirby), Deckards sister, who has stolen a virus from him that could kill half of the human population. As Shaw and Hobbs debate family business versus world saving business, we briefly see a shot of Magdalene Shaw (Helen Mirren), Deckards mom, during a behind glass prison visitation telling Deckard to look out for his sister.

Its agreed between the two heroes that the only way to succeed is to work together, but a full partnership doesnt really seem to be totally possible. After all, we then see them in a jet preparing to use their ejector seats, and as Shaw counts down Hobbs pulls his frenemys cord and fires him out of the cockpit laughing as he does it.

As the action continues, Brixton expresses a high opinion of himself, calling himself Black Superman, which the lead duo gets to experience first-hand when the villain jumps on to the back of a flatbed truck with them and proceeds to kick both of their asses leading Hobbs to later agree, Damn, he really is Black Superman.

Understanding that they are in serious trouble, a plan is made by Hobbs and the two Shaw siblings to get off the grid, which then takes them to the island of American Samoa, where Hobbs is reunited with his family, specifically his mother and brothers. Theyre all willing to work together so that they can save the world, but they are at a bit of a disadvantage. While they have plenty of cars to get the job done, it turns out that the Hobbs household has gotten rid of all their guns.

Still, that doesnt stop them from engaging in full on war, leading to an epic ground battle that is previewed in bits and pieces. The big showstopper is delivered at the end, however, when Hobbs, Shaw, and Hobbs brothers are driving cars and doing battle with a military helicopter. While driving, the giant Samoan is able to throw a giant hook on to the chopper, and at the same time more hooks and chains are connected between the familys vehicles to combine their strength. The end result is pure cliffside madness, as the helicopter tries to fly away, pulling the cars, while the cars at the same time try to pull the helicopter down with Luke holding on to a chain and pulling with all of his might.

Nothing previewed thus far at CinemaCon has been able to match the epic-ness that was on display in the Hobbs & Shaw footage, and while I was already way beyond simple anticipation for the blockbuster, that excitement has only gone way, way up. Everything weve seen from this movie thus far has suggested it could be the biggest and most bodacious story in the entire Fast & Furious canon, and it truly cant get here soon enough.

At this time we dont know if this specific footage will eventually be making its way online, or when the next official trailer for Hobbs & Shaw will hit, but take our word that you are going to want to pay attention. The movie is still a few months away, set for release on August 2nd, but you can be sure that well be writing a lot more about it between now and then. 3 Directors Who Could Replace Danny Boyle On Bond 25

The Bond franchise needs some fresh talent. That goes without saying. We recently reported on the departure of Danny Boyle from Bond 25, leaving the series to now, once again, go on the hunt for a new director to take the reins on this shaken-but-not-stirred series.

I recently wrote about my own personal desire to see The Hurt Locker's Kathryn Bigelow take on the film, and that's still the best option. But if we're in the market for other realistic options, I have put together a list of potential directors who actually could handle Bond 25 and deliver it in time for the November 8, 2019 release date. On that note, let's dive in with an Oscar nominee whose name has been lumped in with the Bond franchise several times already.

David MackenzieDavid Mackenzie has quickly become a hot commodity in Hollywood, largely due to the success of 2016's Hell or High Water. The neo-western became a major Oscar contender after its initial debut, and Mackenzie has remained a consistent frontrunner on the Bond franchise shortlist ever since. The Scottish director doesn't have much on his plate aside from promoting November's Outlaw King (with Chris Pine) and prepping the upcoming TV series, Gemstone, so there's room for him to potentially move in and direct the next installment in the Bond franchise. Given his experience working with dark and dreary tones, intense, hyper-violent action, and beautiful camerawork in complex narratives, he seems like a very safe bet to capably step up to the plate of a blockbuster franchise and do something that the series has not seen before.

Steve McQueenAn Oscar-winner for his work on 12 Years A Slave, Steve McQueen has handily turned into one of the film industry's most beloved and talked-about drama directors. He has not really delved into the action world at this stage of his career (though the upcoming Widows has flashes of the sort), but he has more than proven that he has the chops to do something incredibly interesting with the Bond franchise. His films like Hunger and Shame tend to be smaller in scale, with a heavy emphasis on dark and dreary stakes -- with stories that often don't end well for the protagonists. Given the recent rumors suggesting that Daniel Craig and the producing team behind Bond want to shake things up and do something unique with a story centering on the modern conflict between Russia and the western nations, McQueen could be the right guy to deliver that degree of drama.

Christopher NolanNo list about possible Bond 25 directors would be complete without the inclusion of Christopher Nolan. Over the years, few filmmakers have balanced blockbuster spectacle with a distinct sense of ownership quite like him, which is readily apparent in The Dark Knight trilogy, Inception, Dunkirk, and several others. Nolan has been a fan-favorite choice to take on a Bond movie for years, and he has made no secret of the fact that it's something he's interested in pursuing at some point in his career. Moreover, it's also worth mentioning that Nolan generally does not keep himself overly busy between projects, and his schedule currently looks relatively open at the moment. If ever there was a time for him to get his Bond movie finally, now seems like the time.

Dark Phoenix Director Compares Movie To Avengers: Endgame And Game Of Thrones

In 2019, weve already witnessed the the end of an era in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the polarizing end to HBOs Game of Thrones. But wait, thats not all! The X-Men franchise and current Star Wars saga are also coming for our hearts this calendar year.

The mutants are up next with the release of Dark Phoenix, and the films writer/director Simon Kinberg is prepping fans to say goodbye. Check out his recent words:

I approach this movie as the culmination of 20 years of storytelling, of living with the X-Men for all this time and watching this family come together, and this movie is the movie that challenged that family and tears them apart in a new way. And so I imagined it as the culmination, and I even pitched it to the studio, as this is the culmination of this cycle of X-Men stories. Which there will be more X-Men movies in the future no doubt, but this particular cycle with this cast, it felt like it was time to do kind of what Game of Thrones has done, what Endgame has done, really see them challenged in a new way and sort of survive and go off into the sunset.

Did all our favorite franchises coordinate to leave our lives all at once? Because I feel like we need a breather here. These are a lot of farewells at once. Dark Phoenix will hit theaters less than three weeks after the Game of Thrones finale and a little over a month away from Avengers: Endgame, the culmination of the MCU thus far. Now that weve grown accustomed to bittersweet endings, will this X-Men conclusion measure up?

When Simon Kinberg sat down with Comicbook.com, he also teased the movie as being the most intense of the X-Men films. When Sophie Turners Jean Grey gets hit by a solar flare during a mission in space with the rest of the team, she develops new incredible powers that threaten the X-Men and the world.

One trailer for the film particular heightened the stakes when it showed that Jennifer Lawrences Mystique would be killed off by Jean in the first act. While the decision to reveal this in the trailer surprised many, Kinberg has said Mystiques death wont be the only major casualty in Dark Phoenix.

The movie also marks the last of Foxs main X-Men movies, since Disney recently obtained the rights to the franchise. So while the mutants will likely be seen again someday in the MCU, Kinberg took this chance to close out the stories told through the franchise since 2000s X-Men. He has noted that it has always been the plan to end the series with Dark Phoenix; this isnt only a side effect of the Disney/Fox merger.
