Check Out Michael B. Jordan Boxing With Sylvester Stallone On The Creed Set

We're only a week away from Creed II hitting theaters, which means some of you reading, if you haven't already, will re-watch 2015's Creed to refresh your memory on what happened there. Michael B. Jordan doesn't have to do that; he lived through it. But along with having fond memories of shooting Creed, Jordan also has access to behind-the-scenes videos of the creative process, like the one below showing him getting some boxing practice in with Rocky himself, Sylvester Stallone.

Just because Rocky Balboa has been retired from boxing since the events of Rocky V (excluding his brief return in Rocky Balboa) doesn't mean that he still can't practice a little while coaching Adonis Creed. There's a lot of different ways to prepare for boxing matches, and going a few rounds on the speed bag is one of them. Adonis does this several times during Creed, but there's a particularly cool moment during one of the training montages where we see Adonis and Rocky both pummeling their speed bags at once. This is them practicing that scene, and you can watch the final version below.

As Michael B. Jordan notes in his Instagram post, he came across this video while going through his phone's archives, and having watched the Rocky movies growing up and mimicked the boxing matches, getting to hit the speed bag with Sylvester Stallone was "surreal." Even better, he got to do it a second time with Creed II. Jordan's acted in various cool projects, but getting to work alongside Stallone in the Creed movies helps him feel the same way he did when he watched Rocky in action as a kid.

Having already followed in his late father's footsteps and gotten a little boxing experience on his own, Adonis Creed (previously Johnson) headed to Philadelphia early into the first Creed movie to seek Rocky Balboa's help in going pro after quitting his job and failing to get into the Delphi Boxing Academy. With Rocky's help, and due to his true parentage being leaked to the press, Adonis ended up facing off against "Pretty" Ricky Conlan. Just like how Rocky lost his first bout with Apollo Creed four decades earlier, Adonis lost against Conlan, but it didn't matter, because he had a bright future in boxing ahead of him.

Creed II picks up with Adonis several years later, where he'll face off against Viktor Drago, son of Ivan Drago, the man who famously killed Apollo Creed in Rocky IV. Adonis hopes he can use this match to finally avenge his father, whereas Ivan hopes to use his son to reclaim the glory he lost when Rocky beat him. Since Rocky appears to be doing better than he was in the latter half of Creed, fingers crossed we get to see him briefly partake in some training with Adonis again.

How Ready Player Ones Author Feels About The Books Indiana Jones Digs

Steven Spielberg's Ready Player One is an incredibly meta film that adapts Ernest Cline's Easter egg-filled book from 2011. The movie is chock full of pop culture references, including numerous nods to Spielberg's work. However, as readers may remember, the book isn't always kind to Spielberg, even going so far as to take a shot at the later Indiana Jones movies. On that note, CinemaBlend got a chance to ask Cline about that Indy dig during the recent Ready Player One press day, and he explained that the joke in the book was more of a way to showcase James Halliday's obsession with the 1980s than a way to mock Spielberg. Cline said:

[Steven Spielberg] never said anything about that. You know, he's got a pretty thick skin, and that little dig is done in the context of 'the first three are a holy trilogy,' and it's also a very geek thing. That was a way to build Halliday's character. So many geeks from that era are so reverent and Halliday's maybe a little too reverent about the 1980s and the first original three came out in the 1980s, you know? So anything outside of the 1980s didn't count. It was less a dig about Steven and the movie and more about Halliday's obsession with and fixation with the 1980s.

Those of you who have read Ready Player One may remember this line. While Indiana Jones doesn't feature prominently in the hunt for James Halliday's Easter egg, it is briefly mentioned that the consensus among Halliday and the Gunters is that Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Temple of Doom, and The Last Crusade are all considered classics. By contrast, everything made after The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is looked down upon. Steven Spielberg never said anything about that joke to Cline during the production of the film, but the author defended the presence of the joke with the rationale that it speaks more to the characters' obsession with the 1980s than the actual quality of those films.

Of course, for those of you who haven't read Ready Player One, the specific joke written by Ernest Cline says:

Halliday once said that he preferred to pretend the other Indiana Jones films, from Kingdom of the Crystal Skull onward, didn't exist. I tended to agree.

This situation naturally raises questions about whether or not Ernest Cline offered up input for Steven Spielberg's fifth Indiana Jones movie, which he is currently developing with David Koepp. Alas, Cline also admitted to CinemaBlend that the Indy joke from his book caused some anxiety when Koepp actually showed up to the Ready Player One set to work on Indy 5 with Spielberg. Per Cline:

I will tell you that David Koepp came to the set of Ready Player One to talk about Indiana Jones 5, and I really wanted to go over and say hello, but I didn't because I was like 'Oh I bet he read this book,' and he's like 'Back off.' I never met him. I didn't go over there. It's just the worst thing. I remember when I met him I was like 'I hope he doesn't bring that up.' He never did.

Of course, Ernest Cline probably didn't have too much time to worry about whether or not Steven Spielberg and David Koepp would call him out on those Indiana Jones jokes; after all, he's got his own movie to think about right now. It's far too early for us to see a lot of changes in the Walt Disney Company now that the merger with Fox is complete, it's not even lunchtime in Burbank yet. However, one place that has already seen a significant change now that the merger is finally done is the Walt Disney Company website. The company's homepage now has a brand new banner which, in addition to giving us expected character from the likes of Star Wars and Pixar, now includes images of Deadpool, The Simpsons, and Avatar among others. Check it out.

Of the 14 images that make up the new homepage banner, fully half of them are new to The Walt Disney Company as of this morning. The Shape of Water was a former Best Picture winner distributed by Fox Searchlight. While Disney had previously made a deal with James Cameron to include the world of Avatar in the company's theme parks, they only own the rights to the films as of now. The Simpsons come courtesy of 20th Century Fox Television.

The little monkey is likely a reference to the National Geographic cable channel that is now part of Disney. The cricket player is probably there because Disney now owns Star India, a conglomerate of Indian cable channels that spotlight the popular sport. Then you have Deadpool representing 20th Century Fox's film arm, and Donald Glover, who's show Atlanta is a hit on the FX cable channel.

While the website change doesn't necessarily mean anything on its own, it would certainly seem to be an indication of what Disney finds most important of its new acquisitions. There'd be no interest in drawing attention to Deadpool if there were no plans to make new movies under the Disney regime. We know that Avatar is going to continue forward with new films, a couple of them are in production right now, and The Simpsons is showing no sign of ever stopping. It may make new episodes until the heat death of the universe.

National Geographic content is going to be quite important to Disney going forward. The cable channel's library is set to be a major pillar of the content available when Disney+ launches later this year.

Seeing all these popular characters, from Deadpool to Elsa to Bart Simpson, on the same homepage is almost surreal. All of these popular characters now exist in one place. If nothing else, it opens up near endless possibilities for Disney's theme park business. The number of new attractions that could be created to sit alongside the existing ones seems almost limitless.

Over the next several months and years we'll begin to see how this massive pop culture juggernaut actually moves forward with all these properties, but the work has already begun.
